May concrete finishing class in Massachusetts

Massachusetts hardware distributor R.A. Graham Co. Inc. and Val-Test Inc. will host a two-day class on concrete coating application in May. "The Application Of Concrete Coatings" will be held Thursday, May 13, and Friday, May 14, at R.A. Graham's facility in Worcester, Mass.

Class instructor Brian Anderson is corporate instructor for Concrete Coatings Inc. Concrete Coatings Inc. is a leading manufacturer of decorative concrete products. The class will cover business management, surface prep, acid staining, stampable overlays, acrylic staining, micro-toppings, spray textures, design tips and sealants. Memories that are cemented in stone By MATT SCHOCH Times Herald

St. Clair's Dennie Hill has found a way to maintain memories.

The 54-year-old Marine City native has developed a patent-pending technique of transmitting photographs onto concrete.

His original piece placed a 1972 family photo, where he is featured with his parents and six siblings, on the back of a bench that sits near his mother's grave.

"I truly got inspired by my mother (Gladys), and I was kind of missing her," said Hill, who works in construction and has years of experience working with concrete.

Hill is tight-lipped about how he makes his pieces, but said he is trying to get patents on three separate techniques: the photo-transmission process, the way he joins parts of his benches together and a cement-mixing technique to join colors.

"I don't believe anybody in the world really understands the three parts of the process," Hill said.

"I thought the crux of the thing was the ability to put the photo on the concrete.

"But they were just as impressed with how I notched (the bench) together."

Hill said he can use the technique on benches, headstones or anything made of concrete.

With a slowdown in the concrete industry, Hill is trying to turn the technique into a business, noting he is doing work for universities and also as a favor to family members.

"The whole idea is to put as many guys to work in St. Clair County," Hill said.

Hill's family has been impressed with his resiliency.

"He was told by some people in the business that it could not be done," said his sister, Sandy Holladay of Marysville. "But this just kept swirling out in his mind."

Hill said the process clicked in his head while attending a trade show about a year ago.

He took the idea to a patent lawyer -- David Syrowik of Southfield -- and has been encouraged by the feedback, noting he was told there is about an 80% chance his patent will come through.

GemKote™ 350 VOC sealer is an aromatic acrylic sealer that can be applied to almost any surface; concrete, tile, cementitious overlays and more. Due to the solvent formulation, this sealer is quick-drying and is a gloss “wet-look” finish.

Layton, UT – January 17, 2010 – Concrete Coatings, Inc. has announced a sealer that aides the curing process of freshly placed concrete. ProSeal™ 18 is a non-yellowing acrylic solvent-based sealer that performs like a cure and seal, but is not.

Actual curing and sealing agents are usually meant as a sacrificial coat and are often required to be removed before applying a finish sealer. ProSeal™ 18 contains the same resin as SuperSeal™ and GemKote™ thereby allowing complete compatibility with these sealers. ProSeal™ 18 does not need to be removed prior to using a finish sealer as it is not a sacrificial coat.
